Mudbrick villages, a hike to the big HATTA letters and the quiet oasis most people drive straight past.

Hatta is the classic escape from Dubai's heat and noise, but the best version of the day includes Masfout, Ajman's little mountain village just next door. Go between October and April, start early and bring plenty of water.

Morning: a sunrise hike

The Hatta Sign trail starts behind Hatta Wadi Hub and climbs to the hillside letters above town. It's neither too easy nor too hard, which makes it a great first mountain hike, and the light at sunrise is worth the early alarm.

Want more? The wider network of Hatta Hiking Trails runs from easy family walks to medium climbs through rocky ridges and wadis. It's dog-friendly too.

Late morning: life before oil

Hatta Heritage Village recreates mountain life in one of Dubai's oldest settlements: mudbrick houses, a fort, watchtowers and an old mosque. Entry is free and it's calm, even at weekends.

Afternoon: cross into Masfout

A few minutes away, Masfout feels like a secret. Start at the small, spotless fort museum, with old tools, manuscripts and views over the palm farms.

Then climb to Al Boma Tower, known as Masfout Castle: a short hike to an old watchtower with panoramic views of the valley and the Hajar peaks.

Finish at the Masfout Oases, with flowing streams, shady farms and picnic spots. Please leave no trace.

For the adventurous

Swap the hike for wheels: the Hatta Mountain Bike Trail Centre has marked routes from easy loops to technical descents, with bike rental on site.
