From a 3am chai counter in Deira to a heritage tea house in Sharjah: the cups locals actually go back for.

Every emirate has a karak opinion, and everyone thinks theirs is right. These are the spots we keep going back to, from no-frills cafeterias to a tea house in a restored souq. Most cost less than a coffee at the mall.

KP Chai Café, Deira

An old-school chai café near Union Metro that's open from 6am to 3am. Order proper karak with a falafel paratha or one of the city's better cheap shawarmas. It's the classic after a late night or before an early start.

Arab Chai Café & Restaurant, Al Mina

A small cafeteria in Wasl Port Views that does the classics right: karak, shawarma, chilli paratha and broasted chicken, at prices you won't find nearby. Quick, clean and friendly.

Koukh Al Shay, Sheikh Zayed Road

"The tea hut" never closes. Karak, speciality teas, a full food menu (biryani included) and desserts, in a rare cosy spot among the towers. Made for long late-night catch-ups.

Chai Pakoda Cafeteria, Bur Dubai

Not karak but Punjabi masala chai, with a plate of hot pakoras, steps from the old souk. Open until 2am and very cheap, it's the refuel after an abra ride.

KARAKTAK, Muwaileh

Strong, milky karak with loukoumades (Greek honey doughnuts) or luqaimat drizzled in Kinder sauce. An easy evening tea run with friends, with plenty of parking.

Arabian Tea House, Heart of Sharjah

The slow option: a white, airy heritage café inside Souq Al Shanasiyah, overlooking the old port. Pair a long tea session with chebab, balaleet or luqaimat, then wander the souqs.

Truck Adda, Deira

For when tea turns into dinner: a colourful spot inspired by Pakistani truck art, with karahi, BBQ and desi favourites, open until 5am.

Tip: search "karak" on our map to find the ones closest to you.
